Y.S. Vijayamma, although rarely seen in public with her husband, was compelled to enter politics due to the unfair actions of the ruling Congress party against her son, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, after her husband’s passing.

The Congress leadership instigated their own family member, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, to politically threaten Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. In response, she and her son left the Congress party and resigned from their assembly seats on November 29, 2010. They went on to establish a new party called the YSR Congress Party on March 12, 2011.

During the ‘Samaikyandhra’ movement, Vijayamma engaged in an indefinite fast, urging the Indian government to keep Andhra Pradesh united. When she married Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, he was still pursuing his medical career.

Vijayamma also staged hunger strikes on multiple occasions, protesting against government policies such as power tariff increases and the government’s delay in releasing funds for college student fee reimbursements.

She encouraged YSR to implement various pro-farmer and pro-poor initiatives during his tenure as Chief Minister from 2004 to 2009. Additionally, she authored a book titled “Naalo Naatho YSR.”

In her son Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s absence, she campaigned alongside her daughter, Smt. Y.S. Sharmila Reddy, leading the YSR Congress Party to a remarkable victory in the June 2012 by-elections, where their party secured 15 out of 18 assembly seats being contested.
