Alina Orlova Career
In late 2016, a case was brought against Alina Orlova and Alena Savchenko after disturbing photographs of them torturing animals surfaced on the Dvach web forum. These two individuals systematically abused, mutilated, and killed animals using cruel methods, all while recording their actions.
At the time of their arrest in November 2017, there was uncertainty about their ages. Some reports indicated that both women were 17, while certain Russian media sources claimed they were in their early 20s.
Their gruesome acts involved stealing puppies from people trying to find new homes for them, only to subject these innocent animals to horrifying cruelty. They documented the abuse of at least 15 animals, including puppies, dogs, birds, and rodents. After a nearly five-month closed trial, psychiatric evaluations revealed that neither woman had any signs of mental illness.
Initially, Alina Orlova, whose father is an Air Force Colonel, denied cruelty to animals and received support from her mother. Alina blamed her close friend, Alyona, alleging that the photographs had been manipulated to frame her and that she had not been in contact with Alyona for some time. However, her distinctive tattoo was visible in leaked online pictures.
Savchenko faced additional charges of insulting religious believers and inciting hatred, in addition to the animal abuse case. Consequently, the judge at ‘The Industrial District Court of Khabarovsk’ sentenced her to four years and three months, while Orlova received a sentence of three years and ten days in prison.
Both women were prohibited from having pets or owning animals for ten years following their release. Initially, the prosecution sought a six-year sentence for both individuals, but they both pleaded guilty to the crimes.
Savchenko went by the name ‘Devil’s Duchess’ and was seen in a photo holding a recently killed puppy’s heart with the caption: ‘It’s for you Anubis’ – referencing the Egyptian ‘god of the dead.’ She claimed she needed ‘to be constantly covered in blood to feel warmth.’
Savchenko and her male companion, Valery Smyshlyaev, were also accused of deceiving a man during a date with an underage girl and then blackmailing him by falsely accusing him of being a pedophile. The male companion who helped record the videos received a three-year sentence, and their families were fined for ‘ineffective child-rearing.’
The video evidence of Savchenko mistreating homeless people in offensive social media posts contributed to her extended sentence. This case is notable because animal abuse is not often considered a serious offense in Russia.
We can only hope that while in prison, these individuals receive the help they need and are prevented from harming animals in the future. This case underscores the urgent need for stronger laws and regulations to protect our beloved pets.
