Alina Orlova and Alena Savchenko faced charges in the fall of 2016 when pictures of them torturing animals were posted on a web forum. They systematically abused, mutilated, and killed animals using cruel methods while recording their actions.
At the time of their arrest in November 2017, it was unclear about their exact age. Some reports stated that both women were 17, while Russian media suggested they were in their early 20s.
They would take puppies from people who wanted to find new homes for them, only to subject these innocent animals to terrible abuse. They filmed themselves mistreating at least 15 animals, including puppies, dogs, birds, and rodents. After a nearly five-month closed trial, psychiatric evaluations revealed that neither of them suffered from any mental illness.
Initially, Alina Orlova, whose father is an Air Force Colonel, denied mistreating animals and was supported by her mother. She shifted the blame to her close friend, Alyona, claiming that the photos had been doctored to frame her, and she hadn’t been in contact with Alyona for some time. However, her unique tattoo appeared in leaked images. Savchenko faced additional charges related to insulting religious believers and inciting hatred, alongside the animal abuse case. As a result, she received a sentence of four years and three months, while Orlova was sentenced to three years and ten days in prison.
Both women were also prohibited from owning pets or animals for ten years after their release. The prosecution initially sought a six-year sentence for both, but they pleaded guilty to the charges.
It was discovered that Savchenko called herself the ‘Devil’s Duchess’ and was seen in an image holding a recently killed puppy’s heart with the caption: ‘It’s for you Anubis,’ referring to the Egyptian god of the dead. She claimed she needed to be covered in blood to feel warmth. She and her male friend Valery Smyshlyaev were accused of deceiving a man on a date with an underage girl and then blackmailing him by accusing him of being a pedophile. Smyshlyaev, who assisted in recording the videos, was sentenced to three years, and their families were fined for ineffective child-rearing.
Video evidence of Savchenko bullying homeless people in offensive social media posts contributed to her extended sentence. This case is significant as animal abuse is not typically considered severe in Russia.
