Born on February 12, 1942, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Taylor grew up in the United States. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. After completing his studies in June 1966, Taylor went on to the United States Army Armor School at Fort Knox. He later received helicopter training at Fort Wolters and Fort Rucker, earning his wings as an army aviator on June 30, 1967.
In August 1967, Taylor was deployed to South Vietnam and became a part of D Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, within the 1st Infantry Division, stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base. On the night of June 18, 1968, Taylor, along with his gunner CWO2 J. O. Ratliff, heroically rescued a four-man long-range reconnaissance patrol surrounded by Vietcong forces near the village of Ap Go Cong, Bình Dương province. After depleting his munitions, Taylor (callsign Darkhorse 32) landed his AH-1G Cobra, and the LRRP soldiers clung to the helicopter’s skids and rocket pods as he flew them to safety. Initially awarded the Silver Star, Taylor’s heroism was recognized with the upgrade to the Medal of Honor in 2023.
Throughout the Vietnam War, Taylor undertook over 2,000 combat missions in the Cobra and the UH-1, facing enemy fire 340 times and surviving five aircraft shoot-downs. Post his Vietnam service, he continued his military career in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in West Germany. Taylor concluded his active duty in 1971, holding the rank of Captain.
