Baby Smoove career

Baby Smoove shared how he got his name: “They’re actually two separate names. I combined them. I had ‘Smoove’ first, back in ninth grade. It was our first days of high school, and my friend said, ‘Why do you walk so smoothly?’ Those were his exact words. He said, ‘You walk so smooth; your name should be Smoove.’ That’s how it began. And then ‘Baby’ is like, I’m the youngest, so I’m Baby Smoove.”

Baby Smoove was a quiet student who managed to finish high school despite many missed days. When he was 15, he got into rapping after visiting a studio with a friend and realizing his talent. Talking about his childhood, he explained, “I didn’t want to grow up in Detroit. I wanted a suburban life. I never wanted to be in the streets. It’s not glamorous or cool. I never saw it as something to celebrate, which is why I never really rapped about where I came from. That’s why I appreciate this place [LA]. If I was born here, I wouldn’t appreciate palm trees and 80-degree weather every day. It’s a huge difference when you come from -2 degrees and six abandoned buildings on every block. This doesn’t even look real.”

He wrote his first song at the age of seven but didn’t start sharing his music online until 2012. He adopted the name Bandcrew Smoove and released his first single, “Supersonic,” on his YouTube channel. In 2017, he dropped his first album, “Riding with the Goat,” featuring 11 songs: Kane, Superstar, I Have a Dream, Attentions, Goat, Paul George, Imagination, Pain, Feel the Same, Ben Franklin, and Feeling Me.

In 2018, he released his second album, “Why So Serious,” and another in the same year, “I’m Still Serious.” Smoove had a busy year in 2019, putting out four albums: ‘Flawless,’ ‘Mr. Perfect,’ ‘Purple Heart,’ and ‘Baby.’ In 2020, he released three more songs: Practice, I’m Still Perfect, and Hardwood Classic.

One of Smoove’s most-watched videos on his YouTube channel is “Smoove ‘Akorn’ (Official Music Video)” with 13.45 million views. He has more than 245k subscribers on his YouTube channel and over 60k followers on Twitter.

He describes his music as having a “Lil Wayne-style voice” with a dry twist, drawing inspiration from “Eminem” and “Gucci Mane.” His favorite Gucci era includes Wilt Chamberlain, Dopeman 3D, and the Brick Squad era.

Smoove emphasized that he doesn’t do music for money, saying, “I make music for myself; it’s what I love to do. This is my hobby, my art. You don’t have to listen. I don’t make music to please others. I enjoy making good music.”

Regarding record labels and independence, he expressed, “They have to value the art; that’s the most important thing. You can’t view me as a commodity to make money from. That’s what turned me away from labels. I receive blank checks all the time. They want me to follow their plan so badly. I love making music. I’m not here to support your family. I’m not in the studio making the same song repeatedly.”

Baby Smoove is a basketball enthusiast, which is evident in many of his song references. He faced arrest once on weapons-related charges, and his fans rallied behind him with the trending phrase “Free Baby Smoove” after his arrest.
